Why I'd be Weary of Someone Promoting a 'Cleanse'

Your Body Has Its Own Built-In Detox System

Say it with me: your body doesn’t need a cleanse, juice, or supplement to “flush out toxins.” That’s literally what your organs do for you — 24/7.

💧 Liver: Your body’s main detox organ. It filters your blood, breaks down harmful substances, and converts toxins into forms your body can eliminate.

🚽 Kidneys: These tiny powerhouses filter waste and excess fluid from your blood, sending it out through urine.

🌬 Lungs: They remove carbon dioxide — a byproduct of metabolism — every time you exhale.

💩 Digestive System: Your gut processes what you eat and removes what your body doesn’t need through regular bowel movements.

🧠 Skin: Through sweat, your body can release small amounts of waste, though sweating alone doesn’t detox you (sorry, saunas).

Your body is constantly working to maintain balance. It always wants to be in equilibrium, and it tries hard to keep you there all the time. You don’t need to force it to “detox” — you just need to support the systems already doing the job.

What Actually Supports Your Body’s Detox Systems

  • Prioritizing sleep, because your brain clears out waste while you rest (lack of sleep contributes to hormone disruptions, weight gain, stress, and overeating)

  • Drinking enough water to stay hydrated.

  • Eating plenty of fiber (helps move waste through your digestive tract).

  • Getting adequate protein (amino acids support liver function).

  • Being mindful of alcohol and the amount of packaged foods you’re consuming.

The Real Problem with Cleanses

Most “cleanses” are either extreme calorie restriction or expensive supplements. And newsflash, neither of these are long-term solutions to your problems. They might make you lose a few pounds fast — mostly water weight — and then rebound as soon as you start eating normally again.
Plus, they can actually stress your liver and kidneys by depriving your body of the nutrients it needs to function properly.

So instead of “cleansing,” focus on consistency. The small, sustainable habits you do every day over a long period of time will do more for your body than any 3-day juice plan ever could.

Bottom Line

Your body already knows how to cleanse itself. Your job is to give it the tools — food, hydration, rest — to keep doing what it’s designed to do.
So the next time someone tries to sell you a “detox,” remember: your liver called, and it’s already on it.
